Opening Personal Accounts: Membership, Ownership & Access

How important is the account opening process to your work at the credit union? Just think about problems you have had with member accounts in the past – people fighting about who had the right to withdraw from the account; loved ones challenging you over their deceased parents’ money; accountholders claiming funds cannot be levied because the person on the levy is not really an owner of the funds; or the joint owners who suddenly found out they weren’t on the account anymore. That’s why proper account opening and maintenance is critically important. When done properly, the signature card (aka contract) clearly defines the players and their rights to the account. If you mismanage this process, you may find yourself on the defensive and potentially liable.
